Unlike sewer systems, a septic system requires regular maintenance due to the way it handles your waste. This is costly when working through a waste management company, but you may potentially save money by maintaining the septic system yourself. Septic systems consist of two major components: a well or septic tank and a drain field. Updated systems use a septic tank instead of a well for improved efficiency, although some older homes still use wells. While essentially the same concept, there are some minor design differences which may lead to different issues. The Modern Septic Tank This large underground tank is directly connect

How to Install a Septic System Septic systems, are used primarily in rural areas of the country where waste water treatment is not available. These systems fall into two general categories. 1. gravity fed/conventional and 2. alternative (pump) systems including aerobic treatment units (ATUs.) Alternative systems usually include electric pumps. This is a project recommended for a professional like Murphy's Cesspool & Septic Service with experience in the field due to the potential risk to environment by pollution of the watershed. Prepare & Design Your System The first step in any septic installation is to perform a site survey and do a percolation (soil) test on the area where the Septic Tank is going to be installed. The system then can be designed based on the findings of the survey and results of the soil test. After this, the appropriate permits and approvals can be applied for. Site survey findings that influence the design include things l

A cesspool is basically just an upside down bucket with a bunch of holes drilled around the sides. Except in  cesspool  construction the sides of the bucket is made from  steel reinforced precast concrete rings. These precast rings are engineered with specific design features and are made in a few diameters.  The “rings” as we call them in our industry, are constructed from concrete and rebar. A round steel frame made from rebar is put into a mold. Then the concrete is poured in from the top until the mold is filled. Air is then vibrated out. After that the ring is left to cure. Curing times vary depending on variables like weather and temperature.  The rings usually have holes all the way around them that serve a dual purpose. The holes around the precast ring are a wedge shape . These wedge shaped holes are bigger around the outside wall of the ring. The holes taper inward and get smaller as they get closer to the inner wall of the precast ring. These holes actua

A  septic tank  works like a fish tank where there is a life cycle. Bacteria feeds microbes in the water. There will always be scum floating on the top and sludge on the bottom. Water will stay between the two layers unless the layer of scum and sludge are too thick. In which case the water will not be able to flow in or out of the tank usually clogging the pipes as a result. Bleach breaks down the cycle by killing all the microbes in the water. When you have a good functioning tank the microbes digest some of the scum layer and prolongs the maintenance intervals.  A lot of systems have two  cesspools . The second  cesspool  is an  overflow cesspool  that is in place to leach water into the sand while the main  cesspool  handles the solid material. Sometimes older homes have only one  cesspool .  Suffolk county  mostly have a few systems like this. Suffolk cesspool systems run the gambit in regards to the types and variety of drainage systems in use. Although laws change
