A septic tank or another cesspool would be either of the main components in this kind of wastewater system. Solids and sludge are separated from the liquid waste. Allowing the liquid effluent to drain to an overflow cesspool or leaching pool. Where it drains into the sand at the bottom. Bacteria then helps breakdown those solids by digesting them and aiding in taking some burden off of routine maintenance. Septic systems need maintenance and can't be circumvented. The modern septic system has been around for well over 100 years now, ever since the invention of the septic tank , which received a patent in England around 1900. The cesspool is a much older waste disposal technique. It is antique, dating back to ancient Rome and most likely to ancient Babylonia when the first pipes were invented. Both systems are used for waste management when a connection to a centralized municipal sewer service isn’t practical or available. About 25% of North America relies on the septic tank for private sewage disposal, replacing the outdated cesspool in most cases, but there are still some cesspools in operation.  Both methods share the primary goal of separating the three types of organic waste found in a sewage disposal system. These are: Scum – Less dense than water, floating as the top layer. Scum is bio-degradable. Effluent – The wastewater itself, which is the only layer to be distributed to the surrounding ground soil for natural absorption. Sludge –

A cesspool is basically just an upside down bucket with a bunch of holes drilled around the sides. Except in  cesspool  construction the sides of the bucket is made from  steel reinforced precast concrete rings. These precast rings are engineered with specific design features and are made in a few diameters.  The “rings” as we call them in our industry, are constructed from concrete and rebar. A round steel frame made from rebar is put into a mold. Then the concrete is poured in from the top until the mold is filled. Air is then vibrated out. After that the ring is left to cure. Curing times vary depending on variables like weather and temperature.  The rings usually have holes all the way around them that serve a dual purpose. The holes around the precast ring are a wedge shape . These wedge shaped holes are bigger around the outside wall of the ring. The holes taper inward and get smaller as they get closer to the inner wall of the precast ring. These holes actua
